PERSONALITY
Livio’s always been an emotional guy. It’s in the nickname he’s affectionately called (Crybaby Livio), it’s in the stark black tattoo that stands out with every rush of rage on his face. He started out as a scared little boy, one who wasn’t taken care of by his parents. With his father instilling fear and pain within him, and his mother, seeming indifferent, Livio grew up frightened and hurt and alone. (But he wasn’t really alone. We’ll get to that part in a bit, though) Despite the tragedy that happened after that, and the loneliness far after, deep down Livio grew up to save kindness within his heart. He worked as hard as he could to be useful to the organization (cult) called the Eye of Michael, to make his master, his teacher, proud. Even when it meant killing people. (and it always meant killing people).
You’d think he was cold and cruel–Not unnecessarily. He doesn’t lavish in the kill. When he and Master C, his master, and their goons from the EOM go after Wolfwood for his betrayal, go after what he holds dear, (the orphanage they both lived in at one time) Livio didn’t hurt any of the children or staff. And when one of the other goons moved to do just that, Livio took out that goon first. To Livio at that time, despite what he’d grown to be, he still felt a sentimentality for the orphanage, for their children. (kids are a liiiitttle annoying to him at this point) Similarily, there were multiple times he could have gone for the death blow during his and Wolfwood’s fight, but he refrained, almost disappointed it couldn’t go on, hesitant to end the life of the person he once called a friend. And then, stunningly, Livio accepted his fate. Took control of himself from his alter Razlo, to spare Wolfwood’s life. To awknowledge the pain Razlo was put through to protect him.
Basically it was all over when his master betrayed him (broke his heart!!!) tried to kill him along with Wolfwood. And Wolfwood eventually died, leaving him with a gaping hole in his heart, and a grief so great it could blow him over if he lets it. But despite what happened to him, despite what he took part in (all the murder and betrayal) Livio didn’t give up once again. He is, more than anything, a survivor. He moves on with an eagerness to help Vash the Stampede save the planet No Man’s Land, to fight for the side of righteousness– he cannot ever make up for the lives he took, and the ones he ruined, but he is eager and ready to help make a difference– it’s what Wolfwood would have wanted, he tells himself. Not to mention Vash the Stampede, this powerful eldritch horror, this great man, killed someone to save him. How could he disrespect that? He won’t.
Okay, and then there’s Razlo: Surprise, if Livio isn’t cold and cruel, Razlo kind of can be. And he’s also a crybaby too! Razlo, Livio’s one and only alter, was created to protect himself from the cruel and painful abuse his father inflicted on him as a child. And subsequently murdered both parents. Every time, in the beginning, when Razlo rose to the surface it was to protect Livio from something that could harm him– parents? Murdered. A little puppy that was taking up all of Livio’s attention? Same thing. That last incident though made the other children distrust Livio. So they ran away from those feelings, and wound up in a much worse situation: the grown up world where there’s more violence and theft and cruelty.
Razlo made himself known then, during a time Livio was being beaten up by a group of men. Razlo was physically strong as well as mentally, and brutal– he establishes this immediately– stronger than Livio, that’s for sure, and that strength lures in the EOM pretty quick. Brash and headstrong and pretty crass, Razlo thinks he doesn’t need anyone. He just needs to be strong enough so no one can ever hurt Livio (him). As a child, a young boy, the EOM exploit him, and he eats it up eagerly to show them what he can do, but it’s when Master C (Chapel at that time) speaks up for him, prostrates himself to the higher ups in the organization to spare Razlo’s life, and injures himself, and tells him he’s needed– that doesn’t put a leash on Razlo, but that almost humanizes him even more. He isn’t just a wild untamed creature– Master C needs him. (and then betrays him horribly) (and then dies and breaks his heart)
(Also guess what? Razlo’s the strongest, but he’s the loneliest too. Livio might have enjoyed the love and comfort of the other children in the orphanage, of the other children, he enjoyed being a hero once– but Razlo had been feared. And mistrusted. He’s the loneliest of all)
Razlo knows he’s strong, stronger than Livio, and he knows its to protect him. He doesn’t necessarily call Livio weak, but he reminds his other self that it is because of the pain HE endured that Livio still survives. And that’s something Livio feels guilty about– he doesn’t hate Razlo, and Razlo doesn’t hate him– they need each other. Razlo can be antagonistic if crossed, but would at this point, especially during the last fight with Wolfwood, he only emerge when Livio is threatened with deathly, mortal harm. If he’s about to kick it.
After their master’s betrayal, and Livio’s change of heart, Razlo has one too. He reminds Livio during his fight with Elendira the Nail that Razlo is strong– and Livio is strong too. THEY are strong together. They come to a better agreement between each other, a better coexistence. Now, they both fight for the hope of the future of No Man’s Land, moving throughout it to help those in need, to help repair their planet.
HISTORY
HISTORY GOES HERE. TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR MURDER, ANIMAL DEATH, CHILD ABUSE, SPOILERS FOR TRIGUN MAXIMUM!!!!!!!!! DON'T LOOK HERE IF YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW STUFF!!!
Livio wasn't born into a happy home. Maybe it started that way, maybe one time it was-- but from the one set of panels we see of his family, it was bad. His father abused him and his mother was to our knowledge complacent. Until one day they were killed (we'll come back to that one). Now an orphan, Livio's dropped off at an orphanage on the outskirts of the city of December, along with the rest of the lonely, abandoned children and it isn't a good time. He's terrified, somewhere unknown, with strangers-- but slowly, surely, he opens up thanks to the friends he makes along with way (Nicholas D. Wolfwood), the other children and the kind staff looking after them. Becoming a small time hero also helps.
Things take a turn for the worse again. Now, Livio regularly had blackouts and missing time, but this incident comes along with the brutal death of a small puppy belonging to one of the other children. And the last person seen with it was Livio-- but Livio doesn't remember this. He declares his innocence, and though Melanie their guardian, and Wolfwood, his friend, trust this-- the other children do not. So Livio leaves into the adult world. That isn't so great either-- Noman's Land is a terrible, hot place that'll dry you out as soon as it'd eat you and spit you out. Everyone's scraping to survive, and many are doing so illegally. Bullying the weak, and the young, is prime real estate.
A few men who make a living that way attempt to bully and hurt Livio, but someone comes to the surface-- someone named Razlo. Someone who protects Livio, has from when he was small-- someone who eradicated his parents. He leaves notes at first until it's apparent-- Razlo is Livio and Livio is Razlo. They're one in the same. Livio is protected for the moment, but they need to find somewhere to thrive.
A certain organization by the name of The Eye of Michael (a plant worshipping cult on just a surface level) takes an interest in Razlo's strength and takes the boy in. They train him for 6 or 7 years to be essentially a monster, a killer, doing the bidding of the organization and of Millions Knives, an independent plant trying to save his brethren, blah blah. Then Nicholas D. Wolfwood, his former childhood friend, betrays the organization, gravely injures Chapel, his mentor, begins to betray Knives, their 'God'-- and gets a new job. So they're (Chapel and Livio) off doing missions or something, we don't see them until volume 8 or something, and then suddenly it's fighting to the death with Wolfwood. The orphanage they were in is in danger thanks to Chapel, used as bait to get Wolfwood there, and it works. They fight, Wolfwood convinces Livio there's still good in him, saves the day, but ends up dying.
Now Vash has a brand new puppy to potty train. So moved by Wolfwood's sacrifice, and the need to do good, Livio joins Vash on his journey to defeat Knives and save the world. For real this time. He even fights Ms. Amazing Elendira the Crimsonnail-- kicks her butt, (saved some babies) gets his kicked by Legato Bluesummers, Vash goes to save the day.............Livio isn't seen until the end of the manga. He's FINE! Nicer hair, cowboy, wandering around trying to be a good person.
